Be a Wee Read Volunteer!

“What we teach children to love and

desire will always outweigh what we make

them learn.”  – The Read-Aloud Handbook

Ardrossan Elementary is excited to be implementing Wee Read, a new program to foster a love of books and strengthen our ECS and Grade One students’ foundations for reading and success at school. Through the simple act of reading aloud once a week to a student, we expand imaginations, grow their oral language and listening skills, help them understand print makes sense, deepen vocabulary and comprehension skills. Most importantly, we help students believe in themselves as readers.

Volunteers are the heart of the program. They come to the school for 60 minutes once a week for eight consecutive weeks. They read with two groups of two students for 30 minutes. During the 30 minute session volunteers read a book, talk about the book they read, and play games that support literacy skills. Because each volunteer reads with the same children each week, a bond is developed. This makes the time together enjoyable and special. Children develop positive attitudes about reading and volunteers gain the satisfaction of knowing they have made a huge contribution to their reading friends’ success both now and in the future.

We need your help to make all of this possible. Please help us make this opportunity available to our students and pass on your passion for reading to our ECS and Grade 1 students. Check out the Volunteer Form below. I've included a 30 minute session before lunch for those parents who have an extra 30 minutes before handing out Hot Lunch and a 30 minute session for parents who can spend some time before picking up their children.
